My Journey

I am a 30-something, and I mean mid 30s; christian, wife, mommy to one awesome little man, sister, daughter, auntie, professional woman and home decor lover. My passion for home decor started a while back in my 20s, when I rescued my grandmother's 1940s buffet/sideboard from the curb. She was getting a smaller table and sideboard for her dining room as she is now on a cane and found it challenging to manuveur around her old furniture. I had always liked her buffet - just not the finish. And I needed something in my dining room to store placemats, wineglasses, and such.

I rounded up help for the rescue and off it went to my mother's basement. Where I cut it down to give it a more modern look. My cutting was great back then, so one leg is a tad bit shorter than the other but on a carpeted floor, you can't tell the difference. Over the course of three months, I spent at least 2-3 hours a weekend working on this buffet. I stripped, sanded, and stained the buffet a deep ebony. Replaced the gold hardware with modern nickel knobs and added nickel hinges. When it was all done, it looked like a whole new piece but with the warmth of my grandmother in it.

Funny enough, after the buffet was moved into my place - I had everyone over for dinner and my grandmother said it was beautiful (teary eyed). So beautiful that she wanted me to have her china cabinet when she passes (teary eyed). That made me so proud and eager to do more. So from that moment on, I have been on the hunt to find vintage treasures to restore and DIY projects to make my home reflect my style - vintage with a modern twist.

There's something about vintage pieces that "tug at my heart." I love knowing that they once had another home, they have character, they were made with blood sweat & tears - they just have a soul to them. That's something that is hard to get in modern furniture. Although modern furniture and accents catch my attention too. Taking vintage pieces and moving them forward into time, is just so rewarding.

About 5 years ago, my husband and I began our life together. At first we outfitted our at the time large apartment as if it were our home. As it was. And since I was already a DIYer and home decor enthusiast I could let our apartment just be an "apartment." It had to be more. It had to reflect our style and it had to have character. We recently purchased our first home. We have been in it for a year and half and right away we got started with putting our charm in it. Creekside (as we call it) is a builder ready style home. Meaning it has a one floor plan fits all. Don't get me wrong, you have opportunities to upgrade but the previous owners absolutely did the basics, with a few added bonuses.

So join me on this journey to create, fix, restore, and craft a beautiful home on a budget! There will be plenty of DIY's, some hacks, decor dreams or maybe nightmares, lessons learns, tips & tricks, and so much more.

Peace & Blessings,
KD
